Total Party Kill. Wipe. The big Party Eraser on the Guild Wars Chalkboard.

Most of us have seen them, most of us have experienced them. Let me regale you with a small tale:

No one I knew was on or available last night, so I left my Monk in Druid's Overlook and snagged my shiny Ranger parked in Frost Gate. Now, those of you who have played both know full well the difficulty a Ranger has getting a group over a Monk, so when I found a group almost immediately, I was pretty happy.

I joined the group and it quickly filled. There was me (L14 R/Me), a L11 Necromancer, a W/N of my level, and 3 W/Mo. When the lack of a Monk was discussed I sadly offered to leave, but two of the W/Mo stepped up to the plate and offered to heal while the W/N tanked. 'Excellent. We've already displayed outstanding teamwork skills and a willingness to do what is needed. This should be a slick run,' I thought.

We get in, and hesitant as I am about W/Mo healing, the W/N is pretty sturdy and I do pretty amazing damage with the sparkly gold bow my Monk got for my Ranger. Things died quickly enough the healing Warriors never got overwhelmed. I made sure to heal my cat and myself to keep my load off them.

Problems began to arise shortly, but they're problems I see in most PUGs so I didn't give it much thought. The party occasionally diverged down different paths and there were some passive challenges to the leader (one of the W/Mo) through 'Go this way' drawings and map pinging. The Necromancer had a habit of running off by herself to pick fights we had to bail her out of, and she died twice before we got to the bonus NPC, Rornak (who some people couldn't keep straight with Rurik, hence some odd map pinging when we tried to find Rornak at one point).

Anyway, after some confusion, we realize that we finally found the hidden path to the ballista Rornak needs us to use, but the party is split. A Warrior, the Necro and I are with Rornak on the path when the Necro runs down and aggros about 9 Dwarves and immediately runs back to where the Warrior and I are waiting for the rest of the party. We retreated in short order and let her die...not realizing immediately that Rornak was with her and was killed in the fight as well.

Well, we decide to press on and just finish the main mission, we'll get the bonus another time. The W/N was apparently only there for the bonus and dropped, leaving us short our best tank. Again, we thought we could handle it just fine.

We get the gears and hit two of the mechanisms and figure, 'Well at least we're home free on this one!"

So we are fighting for the last mechanism we need to activate and things are going okay when I decide to loot a white salvage drop between targets. As I do, I aggro a patrol. I am the only person at range and both of them focus on me hard.

I pop Unguent, cycle my dodge skills, and do my best to put them down. By the time I finished one, two people in the main group were dead and I was nearly dead. I didn't even shave off 15% of my second target's health before my beloved kitty, Josie, died, leaving my skills on an 8 second cooldown that proved my undoing.

The rest of the party dropped moments after I did.

So most of us have seen wipes, been present for them, and agitated over the cause of them...but how many of us are willing to admit to having caused one?

I caused one just the other day in the UW... on PURPOUSE. Our leader thought it would be a dandy idea to just bring 7 wammo's and 1 monk(me). lets just say They tanking the Aataxe, then me triggering quest = Instant Wipe. oh yea ^^

Wow, if it isn't another "How Factions is such a let down thread" we actually have a "woohoo! we died in a n00b mission in Tyria!" thread.

Who seriously cares?

Anet releases new chapter for a reason, so that people can buy them, they themselves can make some money out of it, and so that they can also slowly shelve the old content into obscurity.

Play some factions.

I thought this thread was pretty funny.

One of the funniest things I ever did (I know my party members cussed me out for it) was during the Last Day Dawns quest.

We ran all the way from Yak's Bend to the Eastern Frontier to get 6 people to fight the titans at the end. I had already gotten pretty close to soloing the quest with my warrior, but I caught a ride on this party in order to get it done once and for all.

While we're running (which takes almost 30 minutes after you fight off all the Charr), the leader is constantly spamming "DO NOT RUN INTO ANY CITIES!!!" because of the glitch where, if you run into a city, the party is supposed to disband.

Needless to say, I'm sick and tired of his spamming that, once we FINALLY get through the Charr and are about to get to the Titans, I "accidentally" Leeroy Jenkinsed right into Frontier Gate. I haven't seen anyone get so edited by GuildWars in a long time. It was one endless string of -----.

The funny thing is that the leader left and I completed the mission, directly from Frontier Gate, with 3 of the other party members on the next try.

Too funny.

I have two "near-wipes" that I caused. First was THK clearing the fort, going up top before down to the main level. I was a little too quick on the C Space, and before I could call myself off, I had aggroed a bunch from the lower level. Our group was wiped except for maybe 2 and nobody knew what happened . I didn't tell them either lol.

The second time was in Factions, I think it was the Arborstone mission, where we were clear about not aggroing a certain group. But then there was a drop that I just HAD to have, and unfortunately as I bent down to pick it up, the mob entered my aggro circle and they were sure I did it on purpose, but I didn't. Oh well.

We finished both missions successfully, but we nearly wiped both times.

Hehe, reminds me of the time when I had a group of 7 55 monks and a ranger who payed for the run. He got 2 ectoplasm drops while the giant monk machine got none. Good times.

Lol, good story there, OP. :-) Better luck next time, and don't be too hard on yourself, I've been the cause of a couple of party wipes in my day.

I always manage to blame the monk, though. Shame you didn't have one handy in your group, it would have made the defeat easier if everyone could have just blamed him/her. :P

Well, it's good to know I have company. I just felt SO bad for stopping to loot a stupid Dwarven salvage armor that was stinkin' WHITE...I wanted to help the team leader try it again and would even have gotten my Monk to do it as a form of penance (she's done it), but it was bedtime. I just apologized a lot before I logged out.

So...I decided to confess here. =P Besides, wipe stories are fun.

Oh, I definitely have done that once or twice, didnt look at my radar and got stomped on by 16 hydras once..that hurt, lol, especially when you res and there are STILL 16 hydras on your behind (Perdition Rock).

Hey, if you have a decent party you apologize and try again, if you have *ssholes they start calling names. The latter is more common but the first is where you can make new friends.

Can't say I've ever been the cause of a party whipe of real people.. I probably did though..

There have been many occasions where I've thanked the monks for doing an incredible job keeping my rush-happy mesmer alife though.. the result of once again forgetting that this was a caster not a warrior.

btw, does anyone else have the problem of solo farming, then joining a pug and forgetting that your build is now a team-build not a solo build?

Henching is never having to say you're sorry...

hehehe

I'm quite sure i've caused many senseless deaths due to ignorance or sheer stupidity. If only I could recall them as a humorous anecdote. :\

Me monking THK with a PUG:

We had 3 warriors, 2 rangers, 2 monks and a SS. After discussing were not gonna do bonus, a WAMMO lights the torch. Middle of the fight, 2 WAMMO'S run out of the fort to fight. They die, and yell at us monks for not healing. Its me and 2 wammo's alive, last wave. Kings about to die so I heal him. While keeping him alive the WAMMO'S die because they were heroes. We lose, and the wammo's are bitching and whining cuz they died. This is what oine said:
Quote:
Wammo:Omg wtf is ur prob u noob? im more important then the BAD WORD king.
Me: The king dies, its mission over -.-
Wammo: Thats BAD WORD BS man he died many times before and i passed mission
Me: You dont have to lie, im not an idiot.
Wammo: Whatever you BAD WORD noob go back to ascalon and heal then in surmia
*Player is ignoring you*

Yeah.... I got to the RoF mission... Got my new glads..... Didn't do the mission for months and forgot I wasn't infused.... My mate (husband) railed at me in chat about my n00bness and glf REAL WARRIOR!.... My guildies just laughed at me as I repeatedly begged for forgiveness with TOTAL embarrassment. So KNOWING that their tank was not infused they dragged me to get infused within that mission XD Stupid doesn't begin to explain how I felt

You too, huh? Only, it was my Monk. With Ascetics. And I'm POSITIVE I was the cause of our wipe.

But, I'm proud to say it took 3 shots of Spectral Agony to bring me down. Take that, Mursaat!
